Candidate Profiles

The Leavenworth Lansing Chamber extended invitations to all State level candidates and our Lansing Mayoral Candidates for participation in these videos. It is the goal of the Chamber to reach a broader demographic and encourage each and every voter to be informed on the issues and the candidates.


Kansas State 3rd District

Name: Anthony Brown
Office: Kansas Senate 3rd District
Party: Republican
About: Born December 3, 1968 at Ottawa Hospital. Parents J.C. and Mary Lou Brown. Youngest of seven children. Has five brothers and one sister. Raised on a small farm. Mother never worked out of the home. Father retired carpenter for 40 years. Married to Susan M. Brown – formally Susan M. Weber of Atchison. Married 20 years, six children. Live in Eudora, Kansas 19 years. Member of Holy Family Catholic Church. Member of Knights of Columbus. Education includes Baldwin Public School system K-12, Emporia State University 1989-1992, and NSE in Secondary Social Services. United State Marine Corps 1987-1993, Communication Officer, and Veterans of the First Gulf War 1991. School Teacher – Social Studies and At-Risk 1993-1997. Coached Football, Wrestling, Track. Presently a carpeneter.
  

Name: Tom Holland
Office: Kansas Senate 3rd District
Party: Democrat
About: State Senator Tom Holland has represented the 3rd Senate District since January 2009. He previously served in the Kansas House representing the 10th House District from January 2003 through December 2008. He is the ranking minority member on both the Senate Assessment and Taxation and Senate Commerce committees. He also serves on the Senate Financial Institutions and Insurance Committee, the Senate Interstate Cooperation Committee and the Joint Committee on Information Technology.

Tom is president of Holland Technologies, Inc., an Information Technology consulting and professional services firm. Tom also serves as vice chair of the Kansas Small Business Development Center Advisory Board.
  


Kansas State 5th District

Name: Steve Fitzgerald
Office: Kansas Senate 5th District
Party: Republican
About: Steve and Francie moved to Leavenworth twice. Once when Steve was a student at CGSC and later when he was assigned there. Steve has been on the Catholic school board and the public school board and their children have attended Lutheran, Catholic, and Public schools in Leavenworth.
As a businessman, Steve had a small business in Leavenworth for over ten years, employing up to fifteen people and serving companies nationwide with executive search services. After the 9/11 attacks, Steve closed his business and went to work for the US Army as a consultant with Northrop Grumman Corporation.
    

Name: Kelly Kultala
Office: Kansas Senate 5th District
Party: Democrat
About: A fifth-generation Kansan, Senator Kelly Kultala was born and spent some of her childhood in Leavenworth. She served the Unified Government of Wyandotte County/Kansas City Board of Commissioners from 2001-2005 and the Piper USD 203 School Board from 1999-2001 and 2006-2007.

While in the Senate, Kultala worked with local leaders to create more than 8,000 jobs in the 5th District, including more than 400 at Leavenworth's Consolidated Patient Account Center. As a member of the state's budget committee, she has worked tirelessly to protect funding for essential state programs, to reduce waiting lists, and to restore funding for public education.
     


Kansas House of Representatives 40th District

Name: John Bradford
Office: Kansas House of Representatives 40th District
Party: Republican
About: A retired military officer, John is a member of the NRA, KFL, American Legion, VFW, and a board member of the Lvn LWV. John holds a BS in Political Science, a MS in Logistics Management, is a graduate of US Army CGSC, and the KS Men's Leadership Series.
John was a principal author of the KS Republican Platform and was nationally recognized as a grass roots champion, leading the charge in Kansas against wasteful spending. John also works diligently across Kansas assisting party leaderships in building strong organizations.
John will carry his message of conservative values and financial responsibility to Topeka.

About: I am Linda Johnson, a Democrat running in the 40th District. I was born in Kansas and have lived here most of my life.
I am very concerned about the current priorities of the state. My priorities would be to assure adequately and sustainably funded, high quality education, mental health, and health care for all our children. Second, a balanced budget with everyone paying their fair share. And 3rd, good jobs that pay enough for young people to see potential to thrive, not just to survive.
We can and must do better! I want to be part of Kansas' future.

Name: Jana Goodman

About: I have been honored to serve the 41st District full-time for the past two years. I believe that the most important work I do is to protect the freedom of Kansans. I want Kansas to be a place where the only limit is the skies that are not cloudy all day and we fight for that.

My commitment to the 41st District is total. I've lived here for years. My children and grandchildren are here. I have a 100% attendance record in the Kansas House. Representing my constituents and doing the best possible things for Kansas is my only job.
    

Name: Melanie Meier

About: Representative Melanie Meier is a combat veteran and Kansas National Guardsman first elected to the House of Representatives in 2008. A graduate of Leavenworth High, Melanie earned her degree in Economics at KU and Masters in Management while serving in Korea. As a DoD security specialist for the Army and Navy, and an Army Reservist, her duties took her many places including New York in the aftermath of 9-11 and New Orleans for hurricane relief. She and her husband, Tom, marries at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in 1991; both work on Fort Leavenworth and actively volunteer in many Leavenworth organizations.

About: I am a retired Army officer currently working as a defense contractor with Engineering and Professional Services (EPS) Inc. I am currently serving my 3rd term on the city council.
As Lansing's new mayor, I will keep Lansing a great place to live. My priorities are updating the comprehensive plan, maintaining the city's infrastructure in the best condition possible, supporting economic development and balanced growth, while offering excellent city parks, facilities, and services. I will continue the city's good relationship with the Lansing School District. This will be accomplished with due diligence during budget cycles to keep taxes low.
